(So)(Co) Sit Down with Caprice Abowitt

I'm excited to share this week's (So)(Co) Sit Down with you! I started practicing yoga with Caprice at Sacred Sounds Yoga in February 2013 and I've never looked back. She played such a crucial role in my healing post-surgery and really helped me modify to ensure I didn't undergo any pain but also pushed my limits when she knew I could. She's one of the main reasons why yoga has become such a huge part of my life. She is extremely fun, playful and creative and overall a very kind and supportive person. You can almost always catch me laughing in her classes with her silly metaphors and banter (definitely stems from teaching kids!) There's not a single class where she doesn't say 'let go of what no longer serves you' and it's always a good reminder when we often get too caught up in our head.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS?

As a freelancer, every day is a little different for me. Most days, I'm teaching both group classes and private, in-home sessions. Some days, I'm leading teacher trainings. I try to fit in some time for "office hours" every day -- answering student emails, planning classes, scheduling and working on my website. I like to practice with other yoga instructors when I can, and I usually make it to some kind of cardio class a few times a week -- I hate cardio but I sleep better when I do it! When I happen to be home in the evening, I'll cook dinner with my fiancé. If I'm doing doula work -- I generally take 8-10 births a year -- I could be at a home, hospital, or birth center helping a family welcome their new baby.

WHAT ARE THREE THINGS YOU ARE GRATEFUL FOR?

My health, my family, and my community. I am infinitely grateful for the amazing people in my life -- they bring me such joy.

EXPLAIN YOUR LIFESTYLE IN 5 WORDS OR LESS.

Joyful, grateful, and balanced!

IF YOU WERE TO ATTEND A POTLUCK DINNER, WHAT WOULD YOU BRING?

I have a major sweet tooth, so I'm almost always put in charge of dessert for potlucks. Usually I bring a pie or a tart, but it's too hot for pie dough right now! So lately, I've been making Ooey Gooey Bars from the Smitten Kitchen cookbook.

IF YOU COULD GIFT EVERYONE YOU MEET WITH ONE BOOK, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Inside the Yoga Sutras, by Rev. Jaganath Carrera. There are a lot of interpretations of this text, but this was the first one I read and the one that still resonates most deeply with me. I think it's a text that is open, accessible, and helpful for all.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING?

I would love to say I roll right out of bed and do a few sun salutations. But I am worthless without coffee (and I really like the ritual of it).

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING IN YOUR DAILY ROUTINE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? WHAT WOULD IT TAKE FOR YOU TO MAKE THAT CHANGE?

I'm always hoping to be more productive in my non-teaching working time. That probably means prioritizing better and spending less time reading think pieces my friends post on Facebook.

WHAT DOES BEING HEALTHY MEAN TO YOU?

Being balanced! I don't believe in deprivation, so I try to make my diet, my fitness, and my general lifestyle balanced and sustainable.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN FACED WITH HEALTH CONCERNS THAT PUSHED YOU TO CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE?

I could write a novel on this question alone. Our bodies are great teachers!

During my time dancing professionally, I faced several major injuries. A ruptured disc in my thoracic spine at 19 was what pushed me into practicing yoga regularly. At that age, my whole identity was wrapped up in being a dancer, and when my doctor said he wasn't sure I was going to really dance again, my world was shattered. While I did eventually heal, finding yoga and letting go of such a narrow identity was transformative for me.

WHAT SONG CAN IMMEDIATELY CHANGE YOUR MOOD IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE?

There are a lot of songs that light me up - but the very first one that came to mind was Kids by MGMT. It reminds me of dancing in my friend's attic during college.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE SOMEONE HAS GIVEN YOU THAT SHIFTED YOUR WAY OF THINKING?

My mentor in college told me, "you have nothing to prove and everything to share." This has gotten me through numerous performances, classes, and even bad first dates. It's a nice reminder to just be your most genuine self and not whoever you think someone else wants you to be.

WHAT ARTICLE OF CLOTHING/OUTFIT DO YOU FEEL MOST EMPOWERED WEARING?

The navy blue dress I wore on my first date with my fiancé. I'd had it for a long time before I met him, and I'd worn it to countless different occasions, but after that first date it was like it got covered in special, magical fairy dust. I feel so happy and most like myself in that dress.

COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE: "IN ORDER TO BE HAPPY, I NEED TO..."

move my body.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE GOING ON IN YOUR LIFE THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE (SO)(CO) COMMUNITY?

I'll be co-leading a retreat to Costa Rica with Ikaika Regidor over President's Day weekend 2016. We'll have more info soon, but in the meantime you can check out Paraiso Adventures -- they'll give you the lowdown on the trip! I'll also be leading a Kids Yoga Teacher Training that is open to all at Sacred Sounds Yoga - check it out here.

Note from Harper: Caprice has generously donated her time to teach a benefit yoga class where all proceeds will donated to the Immune Deficiency Foundation's Walk for PI. Sign up here.

Born and raised in the Sonoran desert, Caprice has always been a natural mover. A classically trained dancer, she moved to Seattle, WA and graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. She received her 200-hour Yoga Certification from YogaWorks, and has taught vinyasa for studios, gyms, businesses, and individuals throughout Seattle and New York. Following the birth of her nephew, Caprice became fascinated with the biology of pregnancy and received her certification through the Prenatal Yoga Center. In search of more resources to serve her students, Caprice became a DONA trained birth doula in early 2014. Currently, she co-leads Prenatal Yoga Center's Teacher Training Program in addition to leading the Kids Yoga Teacher Training at Sacred Sounds. Caprice is thrilled to reach students during so many different life stages. She approaches practice with honesty, humor, and creativity.
