I'm excited to share this week's guest contributor with you! While working at Agent of Change, I produced the Women.Meditation.Stress. Luncheon and Panel Discussion for the David Lynch Foundation (DLF). That's where I met Bob Roth, the executive director of the foundation. I was immediately fascinated by his presence, energy and the way in which he spoke about the importance of meditation. I knew nothing about meditation at the time, and all that I learned from him as well as this event - changed my life pretty quickly. Bob is one of the most genuine, supportive and giving people I know. He wants to share the practice of meditation with the world and help as many people use this powerful tool of Transcendental Meditation to create inner peace and happiness.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS?

I am the head of the David Lynch Foundation, which is a 501c3 nonprofit that teaches Transcendental Meditation (TM) to at-risk populations—students in underserved urban schools, veterans and women who are victims of abuse and violence. My day is spent teaching people to meditate, meeting with our team of wonderfully smart and dedicated TM teachers and administrators to plan for future programs, and working with our development office to raise the funds so we can teach millions of people all over the world who suffer from trauma and toxic stress and who need to meditate the most.

The gelato I found in Rome by happenstance that was so good, it is months later and I still think about it!

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING?

Go to the bathroom and then meditate.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING IN YOUR DAILY ROUTINE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? WHAT WOULD IT TAKE FOR YOU TO MAKE THAT CHANGE?

Allow more time for deeper quiet. When the David Lynch Foundation reaches its next level of funding and organization stability (very soon, I hope!) I will be free to do just that.

WHAT DOES BEING HEALTHY MEAN TO YOU?

Happy, eating good food, exercising and meditating regularly; happy working with people I love; happy being alive.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN FACED WITH HEALTH CONCERNS THAT PUSHED YOU TO CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE? 

When I was 18-years-old and attending the University of California at Berkeley in 1968 everything around me was falling apart (riots and police and violence everywhere and the erosion of once-stable institutions), it forced me to look deeply within for stability, for my own identity, for what was real. It was the most powerful point of transformation in my life. I started meditating, I became a vegetarian and I shifted my life focus from trying to create a better world through political activism to spiritual activism-by becoming a TM teacher.

WHAT SONG CAN IMMEDIATELY CHANGE YOUR MOOD IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE?

Most any song by Bob Dylan.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE SOMEONE HAS GIVEN YOU THAT SHIFTED YOUR WAY OF THINKING?

True happiness lies within. That advice has been around for eons. I finally heard it and experienced for real when I started meditating.

WHAT ARTICLE OF CLOTHING/OUTFIT DO YOU FEEL MOST EMPOWERED WEARING?

Anything light fitting and organic cotton.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE GOING ON IN YOUR LIFE THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE (SO)(CO) COMMUNITY?

I am working with the DLF team on a big fundraising concert at Carnegie Hall on November 4, 2015, with Katy Perry, Sting, Jerry Seinfeld, Hugh Jackman, Deborra-Lee Jackman, George Stephanopoulos, Mariska Hargitay, Angelique Kidjo and Sharon Isbin. Proceeds will go to help us teach 10,000 at-risk veterans, women and children in New York City to meditate.

Bob Roth is one of the most experienced and sought-after meditation teachers in America.
