(So)(Co) Sit Down with Harry Spero (My Dad!)

In honor of Father's Day, this week's guest contributor is my dad. Yes, that's right, after several months of featuring only women, today is the day that I begin featuring men that inspire me  and what better way to launch than with the one that inspires me the most.

I couldn't be more grateful to have the relationship that I do with my dad. We share a deep love for the same music - constantly sharing new artists/bands with one another and him always educating me on the stories behind bands, songs, albums, shows etc. He's a walking encyclopedia of music history. My dad is definitely my favorite person to go to concerts with.

He has been an huge supporter of my entrepreneurial adventure (as hesitant as he may have been when I decided to pursue this career) and his creative brain is always spinning with new ideas on how I can grow my business. He's a true role model when it comes to keeping his clients happy. I'm so grateful to have him as my dad.

How do you spend you days?

I spend most of my days at work assisting our clients in developing their business. Having an advertising agency specializing in sports and entertainment, we are fortunate enough to be involved in very exciting projects every day.

What are three things you are grateful for?

Three? How about three hundred and thirty three? Let's go with family as number one, health, and the gift of being able to think creatively.

Explain your lifestyle in 5 words or less.

Always on the move.

If you were to attend a potluck dinner, what would you bring?

My wife, Norine's famous macaroons - and everyone should eat those first - as they are incredible!

If you could gift everyone you meet with one book, what would it be and why?

Catch 22 by Joseph Heller is a novel that I read in college. It is my all time favorite character driven novel. And on every page, the TRUE meaning of life is explained. The great director Mike Nichols tried to make the book into a film, but he failed miserably.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

I meditate, read the papers, attend to my bathroom duties.

If you could change one thing in your daily routine, what would it be? What would it take for you to make that change?

Do some creative writing every day. I made this a goal at the beginning of the year. And I realized that if I have been able to find two twenty minute slots to meditate each day - surely I could find ONE more 20 minute slot to write. My goal is to begin this within the month.

What does being healthy mean to you?

It means being able to function like a regular person with no pain, creaky bones or achy head.

Have you every been faced with health concerns that pushed you to change you lifestyle?

When my dad died suddenly, I began to cut red meat out of my life and only eat it a few times a month.

What song can immediately change your mood in the best way possible?

Do Ya by The Move (not the ELO version) When those first chords hit, it is as though nothing else exists and for the next four minutes, I am transported into a rock and roll netherworld.

What is one piece of advice someone has given you that shifted your way of thinking?

Many years ago, my friend Cory said that I should be nice to everyone, because you never know who is going to give you a million dollars. Once I learned that (and it took time) my life truly changed.

What article of clothing/outfit do you feel most empowered wearing?

My blue blazer. For some reason when I wear it, I actually feel more complete on a business level. In regular life -- that clothing is a t-shirt and jeans.

Complete this sentence: "In order to be happy, I need to..."

"know that the people that I love the most are happy, healthy, and properly taken care of."

What do you have going on in your life that you'd like to share with the (So)(Co) Community?

I am in the middle of recording my sixth album and hope to finish it by the end of the year (the other five albums are on iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, etc - and were once sold at record stores, (when record stores existed) I have also written three chapters in a novel that I am truly excited about but trying to find time to write it. The idea is completely fresh - no one has ever done it - and I would love to get it completed in the next two years!

Harry began his career as a record executive in the 70's, developing recording careers for John Travolta and Silver Convention. In 1979 he became Vice President of Marketing for Crazy Eddie where he wrote and produced thousands of radio and television spots, driving people "insane", during his ten-year stint. In 1990 Harry went to WFAN Radio as head of Marketing helping the first all sports radio station in the country go from “worst to first”. From WFAN, he joined WPI Advertising, where he developed new business such as the US Open and NBA All Star Game, and shortly after began Spero Media where he handles clients like the New York Mets, New York Jets, Riverspring Health, The Orange Bowl, SNY, the WWE and many others. He also continues to write and record music and has released 5 albums in the last 14 years.
