(So)(Co) Sit Down with Katie Toupin

In 2013, I decided to sell my tickets to Newport Folk Festival and was fortunate to find someone (legit) via Twitter to buy them. I stayed in touch with him and prior to attending the festival in 2014, he told me to check out the band, Houndmouth. I was immediately hooked.

I was fortunate to see them last year at Newport Folk Festival and numerous times after in NYC. Their energy is beyond contagious - fun, vibrant and makes you want to dance...always. Their incredible keyboardist, vocalist and only female in the band is Katie Toupin. I am inspired by her energy, voice, talent and playfulness.

How do you spend your days?

I have two very different lives. Tour life and home life.

Touring, I have little control over how my days are spent, but there is a routine that goes something like this:

Radio/Press in the mornings, load-in to a venue at 2:00pm, yoga by myself after load-in, soundcheck, downtime to do anything that needs to be done (shower, errands, phone calls, email, etc) showtime, load-out. Days off are spent catching up with friends, exercising, reading, laundry and maybe shopping.

At home, it depends how much time I have off.  It generally takes me about a week to get back into the mindset of being home. Lots of sleep and time with family.

I spend much of my time working on things at my store, Bermuda Highway. I also dedicate a lot of my time to writing, as I struggle to do so on the road. I do not know how to not work. It is a lifestyle and not thought of as work. I am always involved in projects. I try not to let anything into my life that I don’t love.

I do yoga, rock climb, ride horses, play ping pong, play with dogs and play with my niece.

I’m a person that does well with structure, but I rarely am found doing anything I don’t enjoy. I’m very good at saying no.

What are three things you are grateful for?

My family. The most supportive, understanding, kind people. I’m very lucky.

My friends. I have the most inspiring, creative, funny, loyal friends. I’m very lucky.

My health.

Explain your lifestyle in 5 words or less.

That would be impossible.

If you were to attend a potluck dinner, what would you bring?

Pumpkin Pie. It’s on my mind right now. 'Tis the season.

If you could gift everyone you meet with one book, what would it be and why?

Right now - BJ Novak, One More Thing.  It’s hilarious and laughter fixes just about everything.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

Get on my phone. It’s a bad habit. I’ve also started eating oatmeal every day.

If you could change one thing in your daily routine, what would it be? What would it take for you to make that change?

I’m fairly happy with my routine. I do my best to have structure in a career that doesn’t lend itself to routine in general. I do a pretty good job. I could read more, I suppose, but I’m not about to beat myself up about it.

What does being healthy mean to you?

Have you ever been faced with health concerns that pushed you to change your lifestyle? Explain.

When I was 16, I had an eating disorder and was very close to death. It made me grow up very fast. I ended up finishing high school online. It changed my whole life for the better. I’m a much stronger person and have a much deeper understanding of myself having gone through it.

I also shattered my left arm snowboarding when I was 17. It was very serious. I still have issues with it, but I’m very grateful that I was able to keep my arm and miraculously can move all my fingers. I don’t snowboard any more.

What song can immediately change your mood in the best way possible?

So many songs. The boys in my band know that if you play Katie’s Been Gone by The Band I get super happy. Who doesn’t like a song with their name in it?

What is one piece of advice someone has given you that shifted your way of thinking?

One?! ha

What article of clothing/outfit do you feel most empowered wearing?

Clothing makes a huge difference in how I feel. It varies. I think a badass jacket is the most fool-proof thing.

Complete this sentence: “In order to be happy, I need to….”

Stay grateful and think about people other than myself.

What do you have going on in your life that you’d like to share with the (So)(Co) Community?

My store, Bermuda Highway, is an amazing thing. It unites music and fashion and we are constantly growing. We are newly available online here. Follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook

Katie Toupin is the keyboardist and vocalist in the band Houndmouth. She and the band all grew up together in New Albany, IN – a small city just on the outskirts of Louisville, KY. Each member played music in different projects before, sometimes with each other. Katie is also the owner of a boutique clothing store in Louisville’s NuLu district called Bermuda Highway. Outside of her passion for music, she is a fashion enthusiast and animal lover.
